In a highly anticipated announcement, the CEO of what was Facebook Inc. introduced the company’s new name, Meta. This rebrand aims to give the company an identity beyond the social media world and to market its new metaverse project.
In his Founder’s Letter, CEO Mark Zuckerberg described Meta’s next steps: “The next platform will be even more immersive — an embodied internet where you’re in the experience, not just looking at it. We call this the metaverse, and it will touch every product we build.”
Through sophisticated Augmented Reality (AR) technology, the project is meant to turn the online world into one that is more like our physical world, one that we are more able to feel and interact in. However, the metaverse is also meant to create a world that has more opportunities than our real world, where technology can be used to “do things you couldn’t do in the physical world.”
