While Meta is removing one placement, it is giving advertisers more control over who gets left out.
The platform has introduced exclusion-only custom audiences, allowing advertisers to create audiences specifically to exclude people from campaigns. These can be useful for customers who have opted out, employees, or groups that businesses cannot legally target.
Unlike regular custom audiences, these lists cannot later be used to include people or be converted back into standard audiences. In other words, once someone is on the “not this time” list, they stay there.
The update gives advertisers another safeguard against accidental targeting, while potentially reducing wasted ad spend.
The update is particularly interesting given Meta’s recent history with exclusions. After removing Detailed Targeting Exclusions, Meta is now giving advertisers another dedicated way to exclude specific audiences, showing it is changing how exclusions work, rather than getting rid of them altogether.
