Meta is quietly removing one of the few remaining controls advertisers have over where their campaigns appear. The platform is phasing out the ability to exclude specific ad placements and platforms, instead pushing brands to let its automated system decide where ads should run.
The logic is familiar: Meta believes its algorithms can find the audiences and placements most likely to deliver results more effectively than advertisers can. But there is an important trade-off here. The more Meta optimises campaigns automatically, the less visibility brands have into where their money actually goes.
This is another step toward Meta’s bigger vision of fully automated advertising, where businesses provide an objective and let AI handle everything from targeting to creative and placement. Convenient? Absolutely. But for advertisers used to having the final say, the direction is becoming clearer: Meta wants the algorithm in the driver’s seat.
