Snapchat is making loyalty cool again, one map pin at a time

Snapchat is making loyalty cool again, one map pin at a time

Snapchat's new Place Loyalty feature, rolling out now on Snap Map, awards users badges based on how frequently they visit locations tracked through the app.

The badges are private by default, visible only to you within Snap Map, but Snapchat lets you generate a shareable sticker from your rankings. For chains and brands with multiple locations, Snapchat aggregates visit data across all sites, meaning your loyalty to a chain, not just one branch, counts toward your ranking.

It would be dishonest to discuss Place Loyalty without acknowledging the influence of Foursquare. Foursquare's mayorships, the feature that awarded a virtual title to the most frequent visitor, were compelling before check-in culture collapsed under its own weight. The concept tapped into something real: people like recognition, even symbolic recognition, for the habits they've already built. Foursquare eventually pivoted entirely into location data and B2B services, leaving the social layer behind.

Snapchat is revisiting that territory with better tools, a larger user base, and the sense that the timing might finally be right again. The application has always understood habit formation through competitive mechanics better, with Snap Streaks turning what could have been a passive feature into something millions of users actively protect. Place Loyalty is applying the same logic to physical behavior rather than digital interaction, rewarding you for going to your regular spots.

It is worth noting that more users enabling location tracking in order to compete for badges means more location data flowing through Snap Map. That data has direct value for brands using Promoted Places, as it provides insights of actual visitor patterns, not just intent signals.

For marketers thinking about how to integrate with Snap Map, this is worth tracking. A user who has earned a gold badge at your brand's location is, by definition, a highly loyal customer, the kind of customer you want to reach with exclusive offers, early access, etc.
