Threads brings Meta AI into direct messages

Threads brings Meta AI into direct messages

Our updates this week feel a little Black Mirror-coded. While LinkedIn is trying to remove AI content that feels too robotic, Threads is doing the opposite… bringing AI closer to the conversations we’re already having.

Threads is rolling out Meta AI in direct messages, allowing users to share posts, images, videos, and links with the chatbot without opening a separate AI tool. This means that users can now bring AI directly into their conversations.

The update turns Meta AI into more of a conversation partner than a search tool. Need context on a post? Want ideas based on a shared image? Curious about a topic your friend sent? AI is now just another participant in the chat - (The group chat got an upgrade.)

The move fits into Meta’s bigger AI strategy of making its assistant available across platforms, including Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp. The goal is simple: make AI available wherever people already spend their time.

For brands, this could change how content is discovered and discussed. A post may no longer end with a like or comment… it could become the starting point for a conversation with AI.
