X is rolling out a new number-code option for X Chat, allowing users to generate a private 10-digit X number that they can share with people they are not connected to. The number can be used to enable DMs, along with audio and video calls, without sharing a personal phone number.
The idea is to make it easier to connect with people outside your network while keeping your actual contact details private. Users can also refresh their X number, giving them a little more control over who can reach them.
It is a simple addition, but an interesting one as X continues to expand its messaging system beyond traditional DMs. The platform is essentially creating another layer between your profile and your personal contact details.
Your phone number can stay private. Your X number, apparently, is fair game.
