X CEO Linda Yaccarino wrapped up 2024 with a bang, announcing that X Money (formerly known as X Payments, because adding "Money" makes it sound cooler) is finally launching this year in select US states to begin with.
Meta had already tried to make this happen – twice! They attempted to turn Messenger into a payment powerhouse and tried their luck with WhatsApp payments in other markets, but neither took off.
Now, X has managed to secure money transmitter licenses in 38 U.S. states, which is impressive–but not quite the coast-to-coast domination they were hoping for. This limited launch is a bit of a speed bump in Elon Musk's grand vision of creating the Western equivalent of WeChat, that super-app in China that does everything short of brewing your morning coffee.
