YouTube gives creators more control over thumbnails

YouTube gives creators more control over thumbnails

YouTube has introduced new thumbnail tools inside YouTube Studio, giving creators greater control over one of the biggest drivers of video discovery. While thumbnails have always played a decisive role in attracting viewers, creators have traditionally relied on external design tools and trial-and-error to optimize them. This update brings much more of that process directly in-house.

The biggest change comes with custom thumbnails for Shorts, with competition in short-form video continuing to intensify. Rather than relying on automatically selected frames, creators can now decide how their content appears before viewers ever press play, giving them greater control over first impressions.

YouTube is also introducing suggested thumbnail frames for Shorts on desktop, alongside AI-powered thumbnail generation through Ask Studio. Creators can now request thumbnail concepts and refine elements such as layouts, colours, and styles through AI, reflecting YouTube’s wider strategy of using technology to simplify repetitive tasks.

There is a broader creator economy trend running beneath this rollout. As platforms compete for attention across increasingly crowded feeds, even small improvements in presentation can significantly influence discoverability.

For marketers and creators alike, these additions make YouTube Studio feel less like a publishing tool and more like an end-to-end creative workspace.
