Elon Musk has thrown another curveball: charging a small fee for new users who want to post on X.

This proposal stems from Musk’s concern about X’s current state, which he claims is overrun by bots: “Current AI (and troll farms) can pass “are you a bot” with ease.” According to Musk, a small fee for new accounts could help keep these digital impostors in check. 

Although he later clarified that new accounts might regain free posting privileges after three months.

Despite this, the potential fee amount remains shrouded in mystery. The idea has sparked mixed reactions. Some users see it as a potential bot-busting solution, while others fear it could restrict free speech and turn X into a pay-to-play platform.

This potential paywall could significantly impact X’s user base and the type of content it hosts. 

Whether the potential benefits outweigh the drawbacks remains to be seen.
