Meta's Threads app is experimenting with a subtle yet potentially game-changing feature—allowing users to add interests directly to their profiles. But this feature goes beyond just telling others what you like to talk about.
Beyond Just Labels
Unlike typical profile tags or bio information, these new interest indicators serve a dual purpose. They not only showcase your favorite topics to profile visitors, but they also function as gateways to active conversations happening around those subjects across the platform.
Building on Topic Understanding
This feature builds on Threads' recently introduced custom feeds feature, which lets users curate specialized timelines around specific topics or particular accounts. Together, these updates leverage the platform's growing understanding of how topics and conversations connect across its ecosystem.
The complementary nature of these features suggests Meta is developing a cohesive vision for Threads—one where discovering relevant content happens more organically than the follow-first model that has dominated social platforms for years.
For those who've found Threads' discovery mechanisms lacking compared to the hashtag-driven systems of other platforms, this interest-based approach might offer a more intuitive alternative. For now, Meta confirms the feature is in limited testing and mobile-only, with more details promised soon.
