Truth tapping: TikTok drops “Footnotes”

In an era where misinformation spreads at lightning speed, TikTok has unveiled its latest attempt to combat false claims on its platform. The newly launched “Footnotes” feature represents TikTok’s foray into crowd-sourced fact-checking, following in the footsteps of X’s Community Notes and Meta’s similar testing initiatives.

Footnotes” allow users to add contextual information and fact-checks to videos containing questionable claims. Think of them as community-sourced clarifications that appear beneath content that is flagged as misleading or incomplete.

The system essentially mirrors X’s open-sourced Community Notes, with one important difference: contributors with different viewpoints can vote on whether a note is helpful or not. Only when a note reaches a certain threshold of “helpfulness” from diverse perspectives will it become visible to the broader community.

The goal? To ensure that no single ideology dominates the fact-checking process.
