In an era where misinformation spreads at lightning speed, TikTok has unveiled its latest attempt to combat false claims on its platform. The newly launched “Footnotes” feature represents TikTok’s foray into crowd-sourced fact-checking, following in the footsteps of X’s Community Notes and Meta’s similar testing initiatives.

“Footnotes” allow users to add contextual information and fact-checks to videos containing questionable claims. Think of them as community-sourced clarifications that appear beneath content that is flagged as misleading or incomplete.

The system essentially mirrors X’s open-sourced Community Notes, with one important difference: contributors with different viewpoints can vote on whether a note is helpful or not. Only when a note reaches a certain threshold of “helpfulness” from diverse perspectives will it become visible to the broader community.

The goal? To ensure that no single ideology dominates the fact-checking process.
