Instagram Stories get the group chat treatment

Instagram recently rolled out “Blend” for Reels, and now app sleuth Alessandro Paluzzi has uncovered their next social experiment: “Storylines.”
The concept is simple: you post a Story and then your friends can attach their own Stories. Instagram calls it “building a larger narrative.”
According to Instagram chief Adam Mosseri, boosting interaction is a top priority this year. Translation: Instagram knows we’re all spending more time in DMs or watching Stories rather than scrolling through the main feed, and they’re not about to let all that sweet, sweet engagement slip through their fingers.
It’s a clever strategy, really. While TikTok has us mindlessly consuming content from strangers, Instagram is doubling down on our fundamental human desire to be part of each other’s stories, both literally and figuratively.
Unlike “Blend,” “Storylines” might have real staying power. Collaborative Story threads feel tailor-made for concerts, festivals, weddings, or chaotic group trips. It’s a natural evolution of how we already use Stories—just more interactive.
Still in early testing, “Storylines” isn’t widely available. So don’t delete your group chat just yet!
