Instagram is testing a discrete dislike button

Ever wanted to disagree with a comment on Instagram without igniting a debate? Instagram’s latest test might be your new favorite feature. The platform is testing a discreet dislike button, allowing users to privately signal their disapproval without adding fuel to the fire.
What makes this interesting is how Instagram’s taking a page from Reddit’s playbook—but there’s a twist. While Reddit’s downvotes are public affairs that can send unpopular comments into digital exile, Instagram’s approach is more low-key—a secret ballot of sorts. No one will see that you disliked a comment, and there’s no visible count to stir competition or bruised egos.
Instagram chief Adam Mosseri revealed on Threads that these private signals will eventually influence which comments appear first, helping to surface more positive and relevant discussions. “Our hope is that this might help make comments more friendly on Instagram,” Mosseri explains, envisioning a more civilized, less chaotic comment section.
For now, Meta is keeping things small, rolling out the test to a limited group of users across Feed posts and Reels. It’s a subtle but significant step toward giving users more control over their experience—without turning the platform into a battleground of likes versus dislikes.
