Meta wants to turn competitor envy into an “Edits” feature

Meta is currently testing a feature inside the Inspiration tab of its “Instagram Edits” app that shows performance data for Reels from other creators; part of its effort to position “Edits” as a creative strategy tool that floats between an editing suite and a content intelligence platform.

For years, content creation has operated on a strange mix of intuition, trend-chasing, and “educated guessing.” You watch a video go viral, try to reverse-engineer why, post something loosely inspired by it, and then check your analytics while silently bargaining with the algorithm.

Instagram Edits’ upcoming feature could help close this gap. By surfacing performance insights on Reels from other creators directly in the Inspiration tab, it offers creators and brands a kind of visibility that has historically required third-party tools, expensive analytics platforms, or just a lot of manual research. However, having it baked into the editing app itself lowers the barrier considerably.

One thing that’s easy to overlook is that this feature lives inside a creation tool rather than just the main Instagram app. When you’re in “Edits,” you’re immersed in a making mindset, not doomscrolling or passively consuming. Hence, surfacing performance insights means the data is more likely to inform decisions rather than just generate anxiety. Therefore, the proximity to the editing interface makes it actionable in a way analytics buried in a separate dashboard can’t as easily achieve.

One concern is that when performance data becomes visible across creators, it might shift the nature of the creative ecosystem and accelerate homogenization, ending up with a content landscape that’s technically polished but creatively flattened. Despite such a possibility, this feature won’t eliminate all the inequalities in distribution, resources, and relationships. But what it does is hand a slightly better set of tools to people who have been working with less.
