Show, don’t tell with X’s new visual polls

After years of scrolling through text-based either/or questions, X has blessed us with a new feature that allows you to add images to your polls.

X’s Head of Product Nikita Bier announced the rollout of visual polls, meaning instead of just asking people to choose between Option A and Option B, you can now show them pictures. The images display large and prominent until someone votes, then shrink to reveal the response data. It’s a simple mechanic that brings X more in line with Facebook polls. The feature is rolling out to all users in the latest version of the app, and is accessible through a simple image icon in the poll composer.

The thing about polls is that they’re easy engagement bait, and they work. People love voting on things, especially when they have strong opinions and limited time to express them. Adding images makes them even more effective at stopping thumbs mid-scroll. Whether that’s good for users or just good for time-on-platform metrics is a different question entirely.

Then again, we all know what’s coming. Visual polls will absolutely be used for legitimate purposes. However, they’ll also be used for rage bait, misinformation vehicles, and whatever cursed “would you rather” scenarios the internet’s collective id can conjure.

All pessimism aside, there are genuine applications here. Visual context reduces ambiguity, which in theory can lead to more meaningful data. For content creators, it’s a tool for audience participation that’s more dynamic than a text poll and less labor-intensive than creating a full post for each option. For brands with actual marketing budgets and strategies, it’s a quick temperature check that doesn’t require commissioning a formal survey.
