Threads goes long with 10,000 characters

Threads just dropped its most significant update yet: the ability to attach up to 10,000 characters of text to a single post.
You start with your regular Threads post within the 500-character limit, then tap the new expansion icon to open a full editor for your longer thoughts. The text gets packaged as a “Read more” attachment that flows naturally with your main post.
However, unlike X’s premium-only text expansion (which goes up to 25,000 characters but discourages external linking), Threads actively encourages linking out. The company explicitly stated they don’t penalize posts with links, and this update reinforces that philosophy.
For creators frustrated by character limits forcing them to break thoughts into awkward thread chains or resort to image text images, this is game-changing. You can now provide proper context, meaningful excerpts, and give your audience a real taste of your longer-form work.
The algorithm benefits too. Instead of trying to parse meaning from screenshot text (which it can’t read), Threads now receives rich, searchable text data that helps it understand user preferences and deliver better content recommendations.
The 10,000-character expansion is rolling out to all users in the latest version of the Threads app. Time to put those screenshot habits to rest!
