Threads joins the truth wars
Besides Instagram’s shenanigans, Meta is also diving into its own X-style, fact-checking system for Threads.
According to leaked screenshots, the feature will appear in the three-dots menu. But here’s the spicy part: your fact-checking crusade will be anonymous.
And in a bold move, Meta is loosening restrictions on hot-button topics like immigration and gender, which definitely won’t be a headache for their shiny new community-driven moderation system.
Meta’s timing couldn’t be more fascinating. Just last week, they announced they’re showing fact-checkers the door and embracing the wisdom of crowd-sourced moderation.
Instagram chief Adam Mosseri, meanwhile, is busy showing people how to adjust their political content settings on Threads, while the moderation policy undergoes a complete transition.
The real question is not whether Community Notes will work, but whether Meta’s users are ready to become the internet’s collective fact-checking conscience. Because nothing has ever gone wrong with letting the internet police itself, right?
Welcome to 2025, where we’re all fact-checkers now. May the odds be ever in your feed’s favor.
