TikTok hands you over the algorithm remote

TikTok is rolling out “Manage Topics” globally, a feature that lets you tell the For You page exactly how much dance content, sports clips, and travel vlogs you want flooding your feed.
The new feature covers TikTok’s top 10 content categories: sports, travel, humor, creative arts, dance, and others that have collectively stolen countless hours from our lives. Think of it as a volume knob for your doom scroll!
But before you get too excited about becoming the puppet master of your own feed, TikTok wants to set the record straight: this isn’t an on/off switch. The platform says the settings “won’t eliminate topics entirely, but can influence how often they’re recommended as your interests evolve over time.”
Translation? TikTok is still going to TikTok. The algorithm isn’t giving up without a fight. And these changes only affect your For You page—the rest of the app still remains the wild west of content chaos.
There’s something beautifully ironic about manually adjusting an algorithm that’s supposedly learning your preferences by watching your every scroll, pause, and replay.
But maybe that’s the point. In an era where platforms think they know us better than we know ourselves, there’s something refreshingly honest about TikTok throwing up its hands and saying, “Fine, you tell us what you want.”
