Twitter gives political candidates a new badge

Twitter is trying to improve its role when it comes to providing valid and accurate political information. It will be rolling out new labels for U.S. midterm general election candidates that will appear on their profiles and tweets after May 30, 2018.

As you can see from the image above, the label is a clickable government building icon that users can tap to view additional information about the candidate. Additional information like the office that the candidate is running for and the state the office is located. A spokesperson from Twitter comments on the subject as follows:

“Twitter is partnering with Ballotpedia, a non-profit, civic organization that publishes nonpartisan information on federal, state, and local politics, to help identify the campaign Twitter accounts of candidates once they qualify for the general election ballot for an applicable office.”
