X ups its verification game
In a bid to prevent impersonation and enhance safety, X has launched ID verification for Premium subscribers in numerous countries, with potential use in screening age-appropriate content.
To execute this, X requires consent to use ID images and biometric data for verification, which might explain August’s privacy policy updates.
Users might be requested to reverify their accounts by submitting a government-issued ID in cases such as changes to the account name, account ownership transfer, account inactivity, or for undisclosed “safety and security purposes.”
In addition, X has also claimed that individual accounts, excluding businesses and organizations, who opt for government ID-based verification will be receiving “additional benefits [and get] prioritized support from X Services” in the future.
While this latest feature is up and running in multiple countries, it is unavailable in the EU, EEA, and the UK owing to stringent data protection regulations.
In this age of digital disguises, X is surely unwavering in its pursuit of unmasking the imposters and embracing a safer online realm.
