Elon Musk just made Grok 4 free for everyone, and we have some thoughts.

Don’t get us wrong, free stuff is great. But when premium AI models are handed out like Halloween candy, you might want to ask yourself: what’s the catch?

According to xAI’s completely unbiased internal testing, Grok 4 has “achieved the best results in all AI benchmarking tests, significantly outperforming the latest models from OpenAI and Meta.” 

Before you get too excited about your free AI assistant, let’s talk about what “free” actually means in Elon-speak. You get “a small number of queries per day” (translation: probably around five). Want more? That’ll be an X Premium subscription, please. Plus, it’s “for a limited time” with “generous usage limits.”

The fact that they’re making their text-to-video generator free for a limited time suggests this isn’t just about Grok. It’s about getting people to explore X’s AI ecosystem, and hopefully convert to paying customers.
