‘About this ad’: TikTok’s newest step towards transparency
Apple’s App Tracking Transparency (ATT) policy issued last year is still rippling throughout the ad sector. In turn, TikTok has recently announced its counterpart feature; ‘About this ad’.
It can be accessed by long-pressing on any ad, or by clicking on the ‘Share’ option. A list will outline the personal data TikTok has mined to specifically deliver it to you, followed by a geared ‘Change your ad personalization settings’. Here you can flick off ad personalization based on third-party data.
In its announcement, the company stated:
‘Users will be able to tap on any ad in their feed and view some reasons why we’re showing this particular ad to them. This is another step we’re taking to bring more transparency into our advertising practices and help users understand how ads work on TikTok.’
The new ad targeting transparency tool is surely a major stride towards establishing genuine knowledge mitigation norms beyond the industry’s transparency theater.
