Is TikTok about to clone your voice?

Recent findings hint that TikTok might be venturing into some potentially unsettling territory, despite grappling with a potential ban: AI-powered voice cloning.

Imagine this: With just a few spoken words, you could create a digital twin of your voice. Want to narrate your next hilarious skit with your own voiceover? Done! Feeling shy about recording audio? Your voice clone can handle it!

According to a report by code hunter AssembleDebug, the latest version of the TikTok app for Android contains strings that hint at a new option called “Create your voice with AI.” This feature would allow users to create a digital copy of their voice using just a short audio sample, and their voice clone will then be available for others to use via the “TikTok Voice Library.”

But here’s the unsettling part: Imagine deepfakes spreading misinformation using your voice. Or spammers bombarding you with personalized voice messages. These are just a few frightening possibilities of how things could go haywire.

It’s too early to say for certain. However, as with any powerful tool, ethical considerations and safeguards are necessary to prevent misuse.
